Many people don't realize that the Cherokee were a matriarchal society. The character for this painting was loosely
based on the book, The War Woman, by Robert J. Conley. She was described as a beautiful young woman who some thought of as a witch with a very powerful personality. In the painting she is as tattooed and feathered as the men would
have been in that time period. I've given her six turkey feathers, which are the feathers of war for the Cherokee. They also represent six of the seven clans. In the book she was a member of the bird clan, so I have the Eagle bringing an Eagle Feather to represent her clan.
The Eagle Feather is the highest honor we could obtain and signifies her leadership
abilities and her significance to the tribe. Her name was
"Whirlwind" so the storm clouds in the background and stepping on the rocks across the chasm are to signify her fearlessness and strength of personality and character. I hope I have done justice to Mr.
Conley's creation.
