"Running the Gauntlet"
Original Size: 48 X 48 Acrylic on Canvas
During the French and Indian War the Cherokees were the
staunchest allies of
the British. The French made several forays into Cherokee
country to attack
British forts, especially towards the end of the war. The
image of "Running
The Gauntlet" is one such episode. The French are marching
to attack a
British Fort with their Huron and Chickasaw scouts. The
British and Cherokee
Warriors are trying to make it down the river to warn the
Fort and have
happened upon the army as they pass above the river. They
have to hide out
until they have moved on. They have to go through the
French lines to make
it back, or "Run the Gauntlet" to make it to friendly
lines.
I would like to thank my models for their time involved in
this project,
especially Bryan Smith who is a living history re-enactor
from St. Louis who
provided me with great info and photos of the French army.
That's him on the
far right, top. As well as Adam Owl who portrayed my
"Cherokee Scout" on the
right bottom and "Lowell Plum" who portrayed a "French
officer riding the
Selle Francais' or French Saddle Horse." Last but not least
my cousin
Dillion who was the "British Messenger." Oh,I almost
forgot that's me
Talmadge Davis on the lower left as the "Other Cherokee."
